Wokai   Microfinance in China

"Wokai" in Chinese means "I start [an enterprise]", and we chose this name because our organization provides the opportunity for micro-entrepreneurs in China to start small businesses and lift themselves out of poverty. By giving as little as $10, you will help these impoverished Chinese grow and sustain small businesses such as food stands, animal rearing, or corner shops. Wokai works with reputable Field Partners to ensure that 100% of your donation goes directly to funding loan capital for borrowers, and that you can see your direct impact on their lives. Wokai means "I start" in Chinese, and we hope you will start by connecting with these entrepreneurs through our website. Wokai is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

Wokai was founded in Spring of 2007 by Casey Wilson and Courtney McColgan, two young women from California who met while studying Chinese at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Based in Oakland and Beijing, Wokai has grown to 12 Chapters across the US, Canada, and China with 200+ interns and volunteers, 10 corporate sponsors, and 2 field partners in Inner Mongolia and rural Sichuan.
